TransPower Provides Sneak Preview of Next Generation Electric Truck Using ElecTruck™ Technology

September 12, 2013

Poway, CA – (September 12, 2013) – TransPower, an advanced clean energy technology company, announced today that it just concluded a “sneak preview” of a prototype electric Class 8 truck using its “ElecTruck™” battery-electric drive system.  The truck, which was just manufactured and is scheduled to begin road testing within the next few days, was previewed at the PortTech Expo in San Pedro on September 11, 2013.  Viewers of the bus included the keynote speaker for the Expo, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

The truck exhibited at the Expo uses a next generation electric drive system designed to meet the demands of drayage trucks operating near ports such as the San Pedro Bay Ports complex, which encompasses the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.  New features of this drive system include a dual-motor propulsion unit designed to provide up to 300 kilowatts (400 horsepower) of peak power, a five-speed automated manual transmission, and a modular 270 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery subsystem using proprietary TransPower battery management software.

The prototype is the first of eight trucks of this design that will be built by TransPower by mid-2014 and placed into drayage service near the L.A./Long Beach ports.  Additional information on the truck’s operating capabilities will be released following initial road trials of the truck, which are expected to conclude in late October.  Following these tests, the truck will be placed into operational service moving cargo containers by drayage firm Total Transportation Services, Inc., a long-time partner on the TransPower project.  Funding for TransPower’s electric drayage truck development has been provided by the California Energy Commission, U.S. Department of Energy, South Coast Air Quality Management District, and the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.  CALSTART, a non-profit advanced transportation consortium, administers one of TransPower’s Energy Commission grants.
