Electric propulsion offers several performance advantages for road vehicles including large trucks. Electric motors generally enable such vehicles to accelerate more rapidly than their combustion engine-driven counterparts. Battery-electric drive is smoother and quieter than conventional or hybrid drive. Regenerative braking can be adjusted to regulate the rate of deceleration, and to maximize the amount of energy recapture during braking.

Using advanced, high energy batteries, the total weight of an electric drive system should be generally comparable to the weight of a conventional drive system. Larger trucks may still require up to 2-3 tons of batteries, but much of this weight increase is offset by removal of the engine, transmission, and fuel system.

Electric drive systems use fewer moving parts and working fluids than conventional or hybrid drive sysetms, so they will typically require less maintenance.
